Sometimes I have an idea for a warm-up drawing and then there are times like today when I just lay down the first shape that comes to mind.
I drew the giant bulbous shape and didn't know where to go from there. I just go the preview copy of my Bernard book so I was in the mind set of big glass helmets and decided that I'd go for a clunky, retro Spaceman. I took a few minutes and doodle him out and turned him around to be looking away from us as I get bored constantly drawing characters just posing for the camera. Keep that same thing in mind, I need something for him to be looking at or interacting with so I just made up a little flying bot that also helped me carry over the bulb shape theme that I had going. Lastly, I scanned it in and dropped in some tones to help add a little depth and topped it off with a little dialog. I feel that by giving these characters thoughts and speech can transform them form a simple warm-up exercise into what seems to be fully realized characters.
This took me about 45 minutes from rough sketch to final lettering. I lightly sketched it out with a B lead pencil and and inked with a mixture of pens and brushes. Tones were were done in Manga Studio 4 Debut. Word balloon was done free hand in Manga Studio and then text added after.
There you go, a little insight into the quick thought process of the morning warm-up drawing. I'll try to post some more thoughts with each new piece.
One a side note, I mentioned above that the proof copy of THE ADVENTURES OF BERNARD THE WORLD DESTROYER was in my hands and I'm very excited about it. I have to make a few adjustments and then they'll be available to order in the next few weeks.
Very cool, Mr. Young- I like Bob's retro-style spacesuit; there's a steampunk-type quality to it --- "I love comic books and I love anime. It’s kind of like being in a crack house with no money.”- Samuel L. Jackson
